Stuart Newman’s Bio

Genre: mellow/ acoustic / indie

Location: UK, Brighton

Unsigned

Stuart Newman is an unsigned 23 year old English songwriter currently living near Brighton (UK). He has a mellow acoustic, lyrical sound that resonates. Fans have described the music as “sunny days on a rainy sky” and “a Beatley Nick Drake”. It’s music for when it’s late at night you need to think or be on your own. The music sometimes drifts towards the political… sometimes towards the quirky… Thinking music, for the thinking music fan. With influences ranging from right across the spectrum, Newman’s writing draws from different creative pools, creating songs with different personalities. Fans have often compared Stuart Newman’s music to that of Elliott Smith, Bon Iver, Sparklehorse and Leonard Cohen.

Newman’s first album project “Single But Defective” has initially been offered as a free download in order to continue to spread the music far and wide.

New material is in the pipeline for the second album... new material includes the song "Head Hurts", which was recorded at AudioBeach Studios, Hove (UK), January 2010. Newman went back into the studio on 15th August 2010 to record the new single 'Feel the Temperature Rising', which has also been offered as a free download.

During July/August 2010, Newman designed and had made some t-shirts, which were sent around the world to fans for free, to any fan who requested a t-shirt (while stocks lasted)… t-shirts were sent to destinations such as Finland, Russia, Sweden, Romania, Taiwan and America.

Stuart Newman - Single But Defective (unsigned) by Beckie Jordan : from : godisinthetvzine.co.uk 21-year old Stuart Newman is something of an oddity. His music doesn't fit into neatly packaged boxes, ready for mass consumption. It sits, in a corner, unassuming, quietly biding its time. This is not to say however, that Newman's work is under-par. Single But Defective is an intriguing album, with Newman sometimes underplaying his abilities as a writer and musician. 51st State is a haunting portrayal of war, politics and society neatly combined with melodic guitar rifts and vocals to match. Other tracks of note include Oil; a brooding take on the current war in Iraq, with floaty beats and vocals. Cry Wolf is more upbeat, with Newman's trademark guitar playing, unnerving vocal style and writing skills fully absorbed by the listener. If you Say has a calming, folk tinge to it, breaking up the political commentary briefly. On Sabbatical again features the eerie vocal stylings of a musing young man, complemented by beautiful acoustic playing. Gotta Work is a despondent tale of work related woe and misfortune set to tuneful guitar playing and vocals. It is clear to see that Newman is influenced by the likes of Leonard Cohen, Elliot Smith and Willy Mason, but this album is far from just a homage to his heroes. Newman's writing is philosophical and enlightened, covering subject matters some would just brush aside. However, covering current issues such as war, politics and society, Newman could fall foul of the cliche trap if he doesn't keep himself on his toes. All in all, Single But Defective is an absorbing and titillating album, which gives us the promise of greater things to come. http://www.myspace.com/stuartnewman Review link: http://www.godisinthetvzine.co.uk/content/content_detail.php?id=2697&type=Demos
