Life Live Misery: An Emotionally Poignant and Dynamic Musical Tour-de-Force from
Bay Area Songwriter/Producer Todd Tate
July 21, 2010 - Marin, California – Life Love Misery, the new ten-track debut CD from Bay Area singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and producer Todd Tate, is an emotionally poignant and dynamic musical tour-de-force. Life Love Misery is “a lesson in extraordinary songwriting, arranging, and audio production perfection,” according to Steffen Franz, President of the Independent Distribution Collective.
Captivating and compelling lyrics reinforce the Life Love Misery’s riff-driven melodies, vocal harmonies and multilayered guitars. Taking inspiration from numerous genres, from classic to modern to alternative rock, Tate’s songs are destined to hook listeners clamoring for a greater depth and intensity of musical heart and soul. Whether it’s the throbbing opening number and single, “Sleeping Dogs” - the video for which was commissioned by Brian Zisk, founder of the SF MusicTech Summit, and produced by Oakland’s “Project Brainchild” - the whimsical love song, “Delightful,” the dark and slinky rocker, “Beautiful One,” to the fade out of the driving closing track, “Takes The Edge Off,” Life Love Misery delivers compelling substance, as well as style, from the opening note, through each-and-every diverse and eccentric lyrical hook and captivating melody.
A rock player with a jazz background, who studied Jazz Composition and Arranging and Audio Production at San Jose State University, Tate is a rare breed of artist of diverse music compositional and songwriting skills and a studio tactician with incomparable production chops. Life Love Misery features Todd Tate on vocals, guitar, and keyboards, Kenny Stavropoulos, former ‘Starship’ drummer on all percussion, and Mario Previti on bass guitar and keyboards. All are seasoned studio professionals, producers and engineers, and all were integral to the project’s production.
The trio is joined by a gifted string section lead by orchestrator and violinist Graham Pellettieri, who refined Todd’s hand-scored calligraphy into the professionally etched string arrangements heard on eight of the disc’s ten tracks. The string sections add dynamism and vitality to each of the tracks - musical production and compositional assets usually not found in contemporary recordings of recent memory. The uniqueness of the string arrangements adds a shimmering contrast to Tate’s Peter Murphy-meets-David Bowie-meets-Marilyn Manson vocals and full-frontal guitar attitude. Bassist Previti and drummer Stavropoulos are an unparalleled rhythm team that serves up each track as hot, thick, and tasty as a New York pizza fresh from the oven.
Throughout the 1990’s and to the present day, Tate developed a keen ear for the song and eye for the live show having played with Bay Area favorites Truman Peyote, One Light Out, Resin, King Money Shot, The Deep Sounds of Bobby Peru, and his Dobro playing alter-ego Sayla Dobro.

I'm working on a campaign for another artist and I had the chance to send the CD to the great folks out at Bryan Ferrish Radio just to check prices of a radio campaign and get some feedback.
Here's what they had to say:
Life Love Misery's self titled CD, Live Love Misery is ten tracks full of rock that has edgy riffs counter balanced with soothing strings. From the hard crashing of sounds of "Deer in the Morning" to the light intro of "Sensation Vibration," this album covers any and all aspects of a well rounded rock sound. Life Love Misery will be likely found in the CD collections of fans who already line their hearing with artists such as HIM and Agents. Track 1: "Sleeping Dogs" will allow none of that. Right off the bat, Life Love Misery is put into full gear with this track. It has the mood of a HIM track and the edge of Manson. Those two elements tangled together musically, only reveal a sound that holds attentions of listeners throughout. Track 6: "Deaf to the Sound" has a softer sound than some of the other tracks. The rock's still there, but it takes a step down and is more soothing with its vibe. "You can't feel it" is the perfect repetition because this one will have audiences drifting away to the music. Track 10: "Take the Edge Off" closes the album with high standards. Talk of everything from "lips" and "hips" this tune creates a sultry tone and with a hard rock song topped with attitude driven vocals, this one definitely "takes the edge off."
