Intercept’s Bio

INTERCEPT was born in 2004 when lead-singer, Christian Knudsen, wanted to put together an EP of his acoustic material to introduce himself more formally on the San Diego acoustic scene. Knowing that he wanted instrumental back-up, Christian approached his brother, Jeff Knudsen, who was living in Los Angeles, about putting some dueling acoustic parts on the record. While Jeff quietly put together those parts during his free time, Christian began to meet with ex-Forwater drummer, Jason Weiner. Jason, dabbling in a new band at the time and sharing a practice space with them, agreed to let Christian in for frequent, secret rehearsals for the album material. They agreed that if Jeff could put something together they would bring in Jason, also, to fill out the backing tracks. What they didn’t expect was that Jeff would quickly bring back excellent, counterpoint riffs, as well as a request from bassist Phil Romo, the bassist for Jeff’s L.A. band, A Blue Aura, to be allowed to add bass lines to the quirky pop songs. All the pieces were in place.

The members worked on their parts separately and met for the first time while working in the La Mesa, CA studio of Sven-Erik Seaholm, an extremely talented producer who would go on to produce the band’s first LP, as well. The unique backgrounds of the members – both in history and influence – brought significantly different takes on the music, and the separate parts of the album came together easily; it was soon ready to be printed. As a surprise to everyone, the short album, full of fast-tempo, charging acoustic guitar riffs and unusual recording ideas, took off on its own. They performed frequently across southern California, beginning mainly in coffee houses and very small bars, in order to achieve some stage presence and musical quality. It wasn’t long before a small army of fans were attending every performance.

Besides singing along with every word for the short EP, fans were also noticing that new material coming from the group was beginning to creep into alternative rock, with bigger choruses and stronger structural builds and solid tempos. Letters and emails began to pour in requesting a new album.

When Yellow Dog was released in late 2005, the band was clearly moving into more sophisticated rock songs and doors began to open. They quickly went from performing some of the smallest venues that a band can gig, to filling rooms at some of the most storied venues in the nation, including the House of Blues, Viper Room, the Roxy, even taking an opportunity to share a main stage with the Gin Blossoms, Howard Jones and Peter Frampton at the Temecula Balloon and Wine Festival in 2006. Their music has been featured on MTV’s The Challenge: The Duel, multiple times, their LP was featured in gift bags at the Sundance Film Festival and they have been featured acts on dozens of websites and music festival rosters.

The music comes first for INTERCEPT, as can be quickly learned by listening to any of their released material to-date; while the songs have pop hooks, the structures and sounds that hold everything together are not cookie-cutter or disposable. The band prides itself in working to put together unique material that features echoes of modern music while combining elements of all the separate influences of the band members, from jazz, latin, classical, rock, and singer/songwriter genres; hence, the name INTERCEPT, which taps into the idea that any song takes its shape from the diverse elements of many styles. Any musical creation that the band puts forth can be viewed as a function on a graph, which eventually crosses both the rock and classical axis.

Currently the band is planning their 2008 tour in support of “Magnolia Road.”

    Intercept Welcomes you to 2010!

(This newsletter went out to everyone on our mailing list. If you are not receiving our newsletter emails, be sure to visit www.intercepttheband.com to sign up!) 1. Happy New Year! 2. The Year in Review – National Tour, “Under the Radar” magazine, Proud Accomplishments 3. 2010: We will see you Soon – Debut show, Contest, NEW National Tour, Music video, NEW ALBUM **** 1. HAPPY NEW YEAR from Intercept! It was quite a year for us in 2009… but like many of you, we’re really thankful it’s over. 2010 has so much to look forward to and we feel like it’s going to be a great year. We plan to get on the road a bit, record the new album – for sure! – and even hand out a few surprises. **** 2. THE YEAR IN REVIEW From the outside looking in, 2009 must have seemed like a very quiet year for Intercept. In reality it was out busiest year ever! In March we launched our first multi-state tour. We met so many great people and had some very memorable performances – in some places we played for 5 people, and some places we played for thousands… but we gave it our all no matter how many were in the crowd, and we can’t wait to do it again! You can view Video Tour Blogs that we posted on our Myspace and LP33 profiles… they’re a little grainy, but you can see us go on an alligator hunt, tear up a hotel room, and check out the sites on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. After the tour we were lucky enough to do a big homecoming shows at the Key Club in L.A., the OC Tavern in San Clemente, and then the Temecula Balloon and Wine Festival outside of San Diego. In the months since we have been working incredibly hard on a new album. We’ve been doing 2-4 writing sessions a week and have just about completed the thing… now it’s just a matter of performing the songs in front of some crowds and then recording. See our profile? Pick up the latest edition of “Under the Radar” magazine, their “Best of Decade” issue– there’s a full page profile on us for the 2010 artist watch on Page 4! We also had attention from some of the most amazing new websites –like LP33! Hear our Music? We had music placements on The Ghost Whisperer (CBS), Melrose Place (CW), The Real World (MTV), The Challenge (MTV) and Parental Control (MTV)! Tons of small sports television and documentary placements, too, and people keep telling us we’re always playing on Pandora. **** 3. 2010: WE WILL SEE YOU SOON Big things in 2010! We’re playing on January 23rd in Long Beach at 2:30pm, and this is where we plan to debut a number of new songs. Great artists on the bill later that night include Sugarcult, I Am Ghost and Modern Day Escape. For California fans, there’s also a contest: WIN AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR FROM INTERCEPT! Check out www.myspace.com/interceptmusic for more information. We’re going to be touring again! We’re performing at RED GORILLA on March 20th in Austin, TX, and as of now other dates are solidifying. Looks like Bryan, TX on the 19th, and a bunch of other shows in MO, OK, KS, IL, IN, OH, TX, and more. Keep checking in for more information. Want us in your town? Send us an email and let us know where you are and what local venue seems right for Intercept – we’ll see what we can do! We shot a music video and it looks great… we’re just going to spend some time putting some finishing touches on it. Keep an eye out for that! And of course… THE NEW ALBUM! We can’t wait for you to hear what we’ve been up to. This next album is going to be the most exciting thing from Intercept yet! Don’t believe us? Mark your calendars for that January show and come judge for yourself. Thank you so much for your continued support. We get so many incredible emails and text messages from fans and friends that have helped us to stay committed to what we are trying to do. We can’t wait to see all of you again soon! Keep checking in at Myspace, or drop us a line at intercept@intercepttheband.com. We’d love to hear how you’re doing, and we want to keep you in the loop for all the big things that will be happening in this promising New Year! -Christian, Jeff, Jason and Phil (Intercept)

Show in January - plus, WIN AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR from Intercept!!

Hey everyone! It's been a long time since we've had anything to say - sorry for being out of touch for so long! We've been in writing sessions for about 5 months. We 100% can not wait for you to hear the new material. We're very proud of the stuff we're doing -- we're really delving into our rock side and we think you're going to really dig it. January 23rd we're opening up for Sugarcult, Modern Day Escape and I Am Ghost on a show called Maximum Exposure down in Long Beach. This is going to be an all day thing with bands playing well into the night. We play early - around 2:30pm -- so even though it's a drive for some of you Los Angeleans and San Diegonites, it's during the middle of the afternoon and you can make a day of it! Tickets are $20 -- included in the ticket price is a FREE ALBUM and a chance to win an ACOUSTIC GUITAR from Intercept! Write us at intercept@intercepttheband.com for more information on how to purchase/enter. There's plenty more going on... but that's all we're going to say for right now. You have to make plans to come see us in January --- we may just be on the road for a while afterward and it could be your last chance for a while! -Christian, and all the guys from Intercept

Intercept has L.A. and OC gigs!

Intercept returns from tour for a rare Los Angeles club gig! Key Club %u2013 May 2nd OC Tavern %u2013 May 23rd We spent most of March and some of April traveling around the country and meeting incredible people all across the country%u2026 it was definitely a dream come true to finally get out on the road. I think all of us were surprised how exhausting it actually is! But it was mostly just an amazing experience. (Plenty of stories, but let's save those for when we talk in person). We posted tour videos on our LP33 and Myspace page. You can see us visit a crazy taxidermy museum where no one felt comfortable, go on a tour of the Louisiana swamps and feed marshmallows to alligators, and do a ton of radio interviews across the country. We%u2019ve got a new video on the way of a stop we made at the end of the whole tour %u2013 we found a place east of Las Vegas that sold nothing but booze and fireworks, so we lost an hour there firing off artillery shells, roman candles, etc, right next to a diesel station%u2026 and Jason nearly blows everyone up. Stay tuned. So now we%u2019re excited to finally bring a performance home %u2013 and can you believe it%u2019s been almost a year since our last true club gig in L.A.? We%u2019ve been keeping very busy with colleges, the tour, parties... but it%u2019s been a while since we got a chance to actually do it right on a big stage! LOS ANGELES Come check us out Saturday, May 2nd at the KEY CLUB on Sunset Blvd. This is a 16 and over show, and it%u2019s $15 at the door. If you reply to this email or track a band member down we can do a $10 presale ticket and save you some cash. We%u2019re closing the night at 11:45pm after the band, Powder. We%u2019ve got New t-shirts, (visit www.intercepttheband.com and click on Merch to see the designs), a bunch of new songs and it%u2019s going to be an awesome night! ORANGE COUNTY We%u2019re opening a crazy night at the OC Tavern on Saturday, May 23rd! First it%u2019s us at 9pm sharp, and then an AC/DC tribute band goes on, followed by an Aerosmith tribute band. In other words: this will be awesome. 21 , $12 at the door. If you%u2019re local %u2013 please come! Look at it this way %u2013 we haven%u2019t played a club in a year, so who knows when you might get your next chance. We%u2019ve been road testing some songs from the new album and we%u2019d love it if you came to give us your opinion %u2013 and to hear some classic Intercept tunes! If you're not local - we hope you stay in touch! Perhaps you're receiving this email because we met you out there on the road, in which case we want to say THANK YOU for coming out to see us! We had a great time and hope to make the rounds again soon. We'll be back in the studio soon and we will let you know as soon as the album is ready! Thanks again to everyone - we really hope to see all of you again soon! -Christian, and all the guys from Intercept

    Back in Los Angeles!

And victorious! We had a million adventures during that first leg of the tour... I just wanted to take a minute to thank each and everyone of you who came out to a show, worked with us on behalf of your college, put us up in your houses, took us on a tour of the Louisiana bayou... There was such an outpouring of support, besides the fact that so many people were just so freaking cool, that no matter what we will never forget the experience. The day following our final showcase at the Red Gorilla Music Festival, (which was awesome, by the way -- we turned an empty bar into a full one just by playing at one point... that was pretty sweet), we started driving away from Austin on our way home. It took us almost 12 hours just to get out of Texas! But after that it was just a dead sprint with everyone taking turns sleeping. Now that we're home and (somewhat) recovered, it's time to start buckling down and getting the second leg of the tour finalized. We really hope to have some cool new shows to announce very shortly, so keep checking in! Thanks again to everyone who helped us out along the way. We can't wait to start working on the album and then getting to come out and visit you all again! -Christian, and all the guys from Intercept

Tour Blog - Farewell, Louisiana; Hello, Kansas!

We've made it to Wichita! We had a crazy time getting here, ladies and gentlemen -- we were in Thibodaux, LA on Wednesday, and we met all the people at KNSU at Nicholls State University. They spin the record a bunch - every time we got in the car while we were in town we could hear ourselves on the radio, which happened a lot across LA, actually and felt pretty cool. Everyone was just really relaxed, smart people, like you'd expect. They went way out of their way to make sure we felt good and were taken care of. The station manager, Andrew, showed us around and taught us every thing about Houma and Thibodaux... and I mean EVERYTHING! So much history there... plus, we got to try some "stuffed" snow cones, (that's snowcones with icecream in the middle), and a real crawfish boil, (crazy good, with loads of potatoes and corn on the side). The tour was extensive, including the natural history museum. Andrew and his fiance were wicked-smart people and we couldn't have had better tour guides and hosts. I digress... actually, before we hit Thibodaux we stopped off as a band for a quick tour of the bayou. The guy who took us out on his boat was a 25-year vet as Game Warden with the feds. He was 5th generation on the land and knew everything about the swamps... every kind of plant, its history, all the animals... He had faced death tons of times as a game warden, hunter, land owner and gator trapper/commercial fisherman, so we got TONS of footage from our conversations with him... I hope we're able to post some of it up. In the meantime we saw huge alligators - he knew right where to find them -- and had one of the coolest times we'd ever had. Keep checking back to see the video once we post it! Anyway, back to Thibodaux.. we did the show and a ton of people came out to support. We want to thank everyone of you, plus everyone of our hosts and audience members across Louisiana. We had an incredible time visiting the state... there's so much that happened I can't cram it all into this blog! But we made a lot of great friends and we hope we can make it back again soon! Tonight the band is back in Wichita, KS after a 13 hour drive yesterday. We play tonight at Club Groove -- it's an 18 show and we hope everyone can come out! We can't wait to do these Kansas gigs because it will bring us back into contact with so many great friends that we haven't been able to see for a while. We hope everyone can come out and hear some of the songs! Thanks for checking in, everyone -- we're doing great and the tour goes on! -Christian

Another blog from the road! (Louisiana)

We had our first official day off of the tour yesterday.... it was badly needed. We're having a great time, but all the travel and cramped quarters can wear you out. We visited Centenary College in Shreveport on Saturday - and that was sweet! We met so many great people, and went out with the guys from the radio station to get breakfast and then to see The Watchmen, which mildly depressed everyone for the following 2-3 hours despite its being pretty good. (Thanks for showing us around, guys!) The show went great and we left from there at about 11:30pm or so and just drove straight through to New Orleans. We landed in the French Quarter at about 5:30am and just drove around... you wouldn't believe how many people were down there washing the streets, drinking in bars, or just hanging out that early -- plus, the time change had just happened, so technically it was still 4:30am! We found ourselves a Holiday Inn so that we could have access to a laundry room for once and have a bit more space, and also be close to the French Quarter. We ended up having a great time down on Bourbon Street... missed Mardi Gras by only a few days, but you can still have a great time down there any time of year, and probably it was more fun for us without 500,000 additional people. We saw a sick zydeco band, ate some crayfish and spicy potatoes, had a ton of cheap drinks (that you can walk around on the street with), tried beignets... and then came back to the hotel and watched "1,000 Ways To Die" for like 3 hours. Now we're on the road to LSU, and then the University of SE Louisiana, and then a huge show in Thibodaux, LA. Hope to see some of you there! We posted a new tour video, as well, so check that out if you can. -Christian

    Tour Blog - Day Two

(SPECIAL NOTE: SHOW ADDED THURSDAY, 3/5 IN COLLEGE STATION, TX!) Wow - two days in a row. Makes me think it could be possible to keep this up every day of the tour. So we drove 10 hours across west Texas yesterday, killing time with making a video blog you can find on our "Videos" section, and making occasional stops at roadside diners... we got a lot of strange looks. Not that the people were taking unkindly to us, but certainly we're not your average travelers... big white van, 4 long haired guys with a video camera... we definitely got some long stares. When we got into town we got a room and a bunch of beer... which eventually ended in us "economically" destroying the hotel room, which you'll be able to see in a future video blog. As I type this we have already stopped through and done what they call "voice drops" at KSYM at San Antonio College and gave them some CDs for their upcoming pledge drive. We're in traffic on the 35 headed out to Rudy's Country Store and BBQ, supposedly some of the best BBQ in the country. Later we're headed to the Alamo, and then to see a two-headed calf we read about. Really. -Christian

    Tour blog - Day One

As I write this I%u2019m sitting at the office table of a small motel room in Deming, NM. I%u2019m finally a few coffees into my very early morning and ready to let you in on how things are going out here before I spend the rest of the day on the road. It looks like we%u2019re making about a 10 hour haul from here to San Antonio %u2013 which means as long as we get out of here early enough we should be able to get in with plenty of time to do some relaxing. I don%u2019t know how motivated we%u2019ll be to blog everyday, even though we%u2019d like to %u2013 but I thought this would be a good occasion since this morning represents the first day that I%u2019ve ever woke up on a national tour. We stopped by the campus of the University of Arizona yesterday %u2013 KANM was an awesome place, probably the biggest college radio station I%u2019ve ever seen. They%u2019re proud to (allegedly) be the only truly student run station in the Pac-10 and they were really cool and laid back there. We did a few live songs and answered some questions (about our favorite animals and what superpowers we%u2019d have if we could have any) that they should be posting on their site in the next couple weeks. I think we made some good friends in the process. We tried to make it to El Paso last night but after a few hours we were just done. We pulled off and found a nice place to sleep. To our surprise, they serve an awesome breakfast at the Grand Motor Inn %u2013 their prices are crazy low compared to L.A. Jason and I both ate for about $7 total, for a meal we would have walked out of Denny%u2019s paying $30 for after tip. And good food makes a big difference after a long day of driving and performing like we had yesterday. And for future reference, you can%u2019t buy beer at any gas station after midnight in New Mexico. -Christian

Jeff's ready for Thanksgiving!

So Thanksgiving is in a few day's and I can't wait!! Usually the holiday season is so hectic that I get a headache even thinking about it, but this year has been so hectic that I think the holiday season will be a nice break! I'm going to go hang out in San Diego for a few days and get away from this crazy town for a bit. We've had fires on and off in L.A for the last couple of years and they've been back with a vengeance over the past couple of weeks. Everywhere you go you can smell smoke or see ashes. My eyes have been burning and I've felt kind of tired from all the smoke. The good news is that we're about to get some rain! I hope it gives all the fire fighters a nice break. I also hope that the rain doesn't cause mud slides. In this town we're either fighting with fires if it's too dry or mud slides if it's too wet! With a year full of politics, an unsteady economy, and an uncertain future on everyone's mind, I hope that if not for a few day's at least on Thanksgiving you can all just let it go! Forget everything that is going on and just enjoy your family and friends and some good food! Hope you all have a happy happy Thanksgiving! Jeff
