  • Flying Lotus- Cosmogramma

    • 8 February 2010, 5:00 pm – Bowden
    • Stirring up a big boiling pot of industry buzz is a most prolific DJ and nephew to the late great Alice Coltrane, Flying Lotus.

The famed beat master is all set to release his third studio album, Cosmogramma,  April 4th of this year.

There are several concrete reasons this album is generating so much buzz:

First off, Radiohead front-man Thom Yorke lends his vocals to the track “…And the World Laughs With You”.

Secondly, this is FlyLo’s 3rd studio album. While ...

  • VV Brown – Looks To Make An Impact Stateside – SXSW Watch

    • 8 February 2010, 4:17 pm – @dallaslp33
    • Those of us who enjoy indie night clubs for the dancing and upbeat pop tunes have quickly become fans of the double-consonant British buzz artist; the likeable and eccentric VV Brown. With a sound that can be compared to the likes of popular UK artists Natasha Bedingfield and Amy Winehouse, this buzz artist, proclaimed as Britain’s new ‘It Girl’ by The Guardian VV Brown is a 6-foot tall, 25 year old, multi-instrumentalist who has been making music since the age of 5. Capitol Records is set to release her debut album “Traveling Like The Light” stateside in 2010 and the first single “Shark In The Water” impacts radio here in America in early February. VV Brown might very well be the next British name to grace the U.S. with her presence over the airwaves and music video channels in 2010. Be the first to catch VV brown at her San Francisco debut at the city's premiere, newly remodeled, indie night club, Popscene, on Thursday February 4th at 9 PM. She will also be one of the most popular up & coming acts playing this year’s SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX this March.
  • New Jamie Lidell LP features Feist and Beck

    • 8 February 2010, 4:02 pm – Travis
    • The metamorphosis of musician Jamie Lidell is something that would make Kafka proud; his career reminds me of that Cronenberg picture with Jeff Goldblum “The Fly”, but it’s not quite as messy and doesn’t involve any insects, biology and other horribly executed plot twists and motifs.

Jamie Lidell made a name for himself during the late 90’s as part of electronic project Super-Collider along with minimalist Dj Cristian Vogel .  After two electronic leaning albums with said project, Lidell ...

  • SXSW Recommended – Princeton

    • 8 February 2010, 1:33 pm – Malia
    • Photo by Laura Heffington My first entry into this SXSW blogging extravaganza is a California band on the 2010 SXSW roster called Princeton. When I first listened to the beginning bars of their song "Calypso," my first thought was, "ok, here's another Vampire Weekend soundalike." But as the Kivel brothers' deep vocals drifted over the uplifting twang of Princeton's backing instrumentals, I was pleasantly surprised. Princeton incorporates several individualist details in an oracularly pleasing way, which, rather than sounding chaotic, works.
  • Strung Out – Update -

    • 8 February 2010, 11:08 am – Jerry
    • After a few technical difficulties with the opening band and their drum kit, Strung Out played an amazing set. We were within the grips of one of the best punk/rock shows I have seen in a long time.

The opening band “The Darlings” put on a great show. I had never heard them before, but it really set the tone for the night. They played the perfect amount of songs and had everyone buzzing as soon as they stepped ...

  • New Music from Beck

    • 8 February 2010, 9:50 am – Bowden
    • Do artists uninspired by profit who simply love to make music exist in the mainstream?

It appears so. The recording artist Beck released another Record Club video last week on Beck.com, a cover of Skip Spence’s Dixie Peach Promenade.

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, Beck’s Record Club is an experiment of sorts where various artists are invited to his studio to remake a classic album. The goal is not to replicate the album, ...

  • Wye Oak – SXSW Watch

    • 6 February 2010, 11:20 pm – @richiecordaro
    • Wye Oak is a Baltimore duo comprised of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack, who will be bringing their indie tunes down south for a performance at SXSW 2010. Wye Oak's latest album The Knot is the duo's second release on Merge Records. Several publications have praised the album, including Spin Magazine, which said: "While the blurry folk-noise fusion of Wye Oak's first album had an offhand charm, Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack's follow-up is tougher and more engrossing." Check out Wye Oak's video for "Sight, Flight, Sight, Fight" below:
  • Primavera Festival – 2010 -

    • 6 February 2010, 10:57 pm – Travis
    • In just a few months, right after SXSW concludes, the music festival season starts kick off at a rapid pace.

For many of us, this means traveling to festivals like Lollapalooza, Cochella and Bonaroo, yet we often don’t consider what’s happening overseas in Europe.

One festival that has garnered attention over the last couple years is Primavera, which takes place in Barcelona Spain from May 27th-29th.

2010 marks the tenth run of the festival, that in previous decades has seen the ...

  • Woven Bones – SXSW Watch

    • 5 February 2010, 12:51 pm – Courtney
    • This year, SXSW will feature home grown trio Woven Bones, a band known for using their magic time machine button that effectively takes listeners back to the middle 70’s when Iggy Pop was still cutting himself on stage and the Stooges were creating the backbone for what would later be called Punk on this side of the pond.

Their most current release, The Minus Touch 12” is available now in limited edition release from Southern California’s  Zoo Music.

      Woven Bones have recently ...

  • Gay Pirates and Jessica Alba – Meet Cosmo Jarvis

    • 5 February 2010, 12:47 pm – Bowden
    • What do gay pirates and Jessica Alba have in common? It’s hard to say what fans have in store for this contemporary entertainment-renaissance man. Not only does he write and perform his music, he is also a filmmaker, poet, and of coarse a campaigner for the equal treatment of gay pirates. His latest video, A Tale of Two Dicks, explores the comical facets of sharing an apartment with people you might care for but truly can’t stand. Written and directed by Mr. Jarvis, the video makes for one gay viewing (pun intended). For this Jersey boy turned Englishman, film making is just one avenue to release his comically creative exploits and rest assured, if you enjoyed the movie, you’re gonna love his music.
  • Choir of Young Believers – SXSW Watch

    • 4 February 2010, 5:56 pm – administrator
    • Set to perform during SXSW this March in Austin, TX are the Danish indie rockers, Choir of Young Believers.

Fronted by 26-year old Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, who has drawn comparisons to legendary vocalists like Neil Young and Thom Yorke, Choir of Young Believers is set to deliver a raw and ethereal performance much like the ones that have helped them generate a buzz in their homeland.

Hitting SXSW with an array of instruments and orchestral arrangements, this band, which becomes a 7-piece ...

  • Woods – SXSW Watch

    • 4 February 2010, 2:29 pm – Bowden
    • The good bands keep rollin’ into the SXSW 2010 lineup. Check out this Brooklyn based psych-rock group Woods Family Creeps. Their video To Clean, is straight off their most recent self-titled album and it totally kicks ass. A stark departure from contemporary music video making, To Clean is a drug induced kitchen coral vacillating between live performances and straight shenanigans. The video may only be a skosh over two minutes, but filmed in stop-motion fashion with quirky gestures and hippie aesthetics, there’s no doubt this Brooklyn quartet plans to take viewers to a time of shaggy hair, free love, and a whole lot of…well…we’ll just leave it at free love. Enjoy! Check out this Brooklyn based psych-rock group Woods Family Creeps. Their video To Clean, is straight off their most recent self-titled album and it totally kicks ass. • Four Weeks Down – 44 to go…

    • 3 February 2010, 4:49 pm – Jamie
    • Last night at Cranes was pretty cool.

I decided I didn’t want to have to switch my capo up and down the neck of my guitar and retune every time, so I made it a point to make all my songs capo’d on the 3rd fret regardless of where they were supposed to be normally.

I was told I played a “hill-billy” set, which didn’t offend me at all.  I played one of my favorite Ryan Adams songs, “This House ...

  • The Daylights – SXSW Watch

    • Epic Los Angeles rock band The Daylights are building a healthy buzz as they prepare to release their debut album later this month. In addition to a new LP, The Daylights are slated to perform at SXSW in March.

  • LA Music Adventure Thursday: Citay, Fruit Bats, the Branches, Restaurant

    • 3 February 2010, 12:38 pm – Chris
    • After a long, stressful trip on the Metro 704 bus, I was more than ready to relax to music at the Echoplex on January 28th. With the lineup of Citay and Fruit Bats playing, I knew that I could expect to do so. Citay is a septet that plays a driving feel-good style of rock that revolves around rhythmic acoustic guitar. It gallops casually along but made epic by male & female vocal harmonies and stuttered yet ...
